Outlook Express creates an email folder, called DBX, in which all the email messages for a specific mailbox are stored. The common DBX folders found in Outlook Express are Inbox.dbx, Sent Items.dbx, Drafts.dbx, etc.
PST aka Personal Storage Table is an Outlook data file that can store users’ mailbox which includes email folders, contacts, addresses, and all other data. Microsoft Outlook is a personal information manager that can be used as an email client application as well as it provides a calendar, task manager, contact manager, note-taking, journal, and web browsing. Outlook client can be used as a stand-alone application, and can also be configured with Exchange and SharePoint servers.
OST aka Offline Storage Table is also an Outlook data file but used in offline mode. Like PST, an OST file can also contain all such mailbox data which include email messages. Though PST and OST both are Outlook data files and very similar to each other, OST supports large file sizes than PST. An OST file can only be created if “Use Offline Folders” option is selected. Instead of the mail server, it’s stored on a local system.
MBOX is an email mailbox file used by various email client software, such as Thunderbird, Entourage, AppleMail, Netscape, Spicebird, PocoMail, Evolution, OperaMail, IncrediMail, ClawsMail, Sylpheed, SeaMonkey, Mulberry, Eudora, etc. MBOX is basically an email storage format used to organize email messages in a single text file. NK2 aka Outlook cached contact is an Outlook nickname file. It contains the nickname for an Outlook user associated with a user profile.
The above files are commonly used by the most popular email client applications. Like every other single computer file, these email files are not immune to corruption. There are numerous reasons which can damage or corrupt email files, such as virus infection, sudden power failure, abruptly termination of the email client application, storage media failure, improper synchronization, software malfunction, and many more.
Whenever corruption takes place in email files, they become inaccessible and you may lose all the email messages and other mailbox data forever. Smart computer users always keep a backup copy of their email files, so that they can restore their mailbox data at the time of data loss due to accidental deletion or corruption. But if there’s no backup file, the only way to get your data back from corrupt email files is Email Recovery software.
