What is PST file and how to find PST file in the system

PST is a short for "Personal Storage Table". It is an open proprietary file format used to store copies of your messages, calendar events, and other items stored in your Microsoft software such as Microsoft Exchange Client, Windows Messaging, and Microsoft Outlook. The open format is controlled by Microsoft who provides free specifications and free irrevocable technology licensing. The file format is also known as:

  • Personal Folder File
  • Off-line Storage Table (.ost)
  • Off-line Folder File
  • Personal Address Book (.pab)

Microsoft Outlook automatically stores messages, contacts, appointments, tasks, notes, and journal entries in one of the following two locations:

  • You can store in a personal storage folder, also known as ".pst" file on your hard disk.
  • You can also locate it in mailbox on the server. Your mailbox is located on a server if you use Outlook with Microsoft Exchange Server.

You can use a backup of your .pst file to restore or move your Outlook data to another computer if you face any problem like hardware failure, lose data unexpectedly, have to transfer data from one computer to another computer, or have to transfer data from one hard disk drive to another hard disk drive.
